Officer Involved Shooting Injures Man and His Grandmother
At 1:37 Wednesday morning, dispatchers received a 911 hang up call from a home on Gadsten Way, near Zinfandel. After returning the call, as is protocol, two officers arrived at the scene to find a 21 year old man threatening his 65 year old grandmother and 44 year old uncle with what appeared to be a hand gun. After refusing to drop the weapon and allegedly pointing the gun at the officers, both officers fired, hitting the man in the thigh. The suspects grandmother who was standing behind the man in the doorway, was hit by a bullet in her calf.
Neither the man nor the grandmother’s wounds are considered life-threatening. It was later learned that the grandmother and the uncle both live at the residence and the suspect, who had previously resided there as well, returned home. An argument had ensued and that is when he allegedly began threatening them with his weapon.
The handgun used by the suspect was later discovered to be a air pistol with a mounted scope, capable of firing either BB’s or pellets. Sheriff spokesman Tim Curran called the gun, “… a very realistic-looking weapon with a scope mounted on it. This has affected his life, his grandmother’s life, his uncle’s life. It’s a very unfortunate situation.”
Curran said the suspect, who’s identity has not yet been released, “is known to law enforcement” and will be arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon once he is released from the hospital. Both officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.
