Pirate Costume Ball to Benefit ScaryU
Families have been attending the haunted houses put on by the folks from ScaryU for years. It has become an integral part of Rancho Cordova Halloween festivities. Run by the non-profit Jewell Performing Arts Center in Rancho Cordova, this teen program teaches students to build and run a haunted house from the ground up at no charge to the students. This year was a tough one, as they were broken into and thieves made off with about $30,000 worth of props, costumes and tools collected over the years. Despite the loss, the kids decided “the show must go on” and they scrambled to replace the stolen goods in time to open the show. They received donations from the community and businesses donated computers. Unfortunately, the two weekends the show was open were the first rainstorms of the season and attendance was down compared to previous years.
The Pirates of Sacramento, a social group of pirate re-enactors, are having a pirate costume ball on January 24 to benefit ScaryU. This event is the first of it’s kind in Sacramento and promices great entertainment. Music will be provided by The Pirates Charles This band is the most popular in the pirate community and will be headlining the PirateCon event in New Orleans in April, 2009. They are very high energy, incredibly piratey and they are donating their time for this event. There will be prize drawings, costume contests, and piratey vendors. A costume is not required for the event, but it is encouraged. The ball starts at 7 pm at Rancho Cordova Marriott and tickets cost $39, which will go directly toward the Jewell Performing Arts Center.
