PG&E Offers Statement Regarding Suspected Gas Leak Explosion

Federal investigators plan to probe the deadly Christmas Eve explosion that leveled a house in Rancho Cordova. The focus of the investigation is expected to be a suspected underground gas leak.

The blast killed a 72-year-old man, Wilbert Paana. His daughter and granddaughter were severely injured and were hospitalized. Three other people from nearby homes have been hospitalized as well and are expected to fully recover. A National Transportation Safety Board spokeswoman has confirmed a pipeline investigator will begin work  Monday, December 29.  The NTSB was notified because the gas leak is suspected to originate from a pipeline buried beneath the roadway.

A spokesman for Pacific Gas & Electric Co., says a worker who was searching for the leak found no excessive gas flow at the house but began alerting residents in the immediate area.

PG&E offered the following statement regarding the fatal explosion:

“PG&E is greatly saddened by the tragic loss of life and injuries caused by yesterday’s explosion,” said Jack Keenan, PG&E Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the people impacted by this terrible event and offer prayers for those who are still hospitalized with serious injuries. While the cause is under investigation, we will do what is right for customers and employees affected by this accident, and we will continue to cooperate fully with public safety officials and investigators. We are committed to understanding the cause of the accident, and as part of that process we expect to begin excavating the site Monday, December 29. At that time, representatives from the California Public Utilities Commission and the National Transportation Safety Board will join in that investigation. For now, our priority remains ensuring the well-being of those touched by this event.”
