Thunderbirds Will Return To Mather For ’09 Air Show
Last year, nearly 80,000 people attended the California Capital Airshow in Mather. 2009′s event is expected to bring in just as many visitors when it is held on September 12 and 13 at the Mather Airport. Joining other demonstrations, the airshow will welcome the Air Force Thunderbirds flight-demonstration team. The team will be headlining the event with their second appearance at the California Capital Airshow.
The date of the event next year has been changed from the spring to accommodate the availability of the big-name demonstration teams. Mather is one of three cities that will be hosting Air Force Week. “With Sacramento’s long history of Air Force presence at two former Air Force bases that have been successfully converted to civilian use, we are thrilled to have the USAF Thunderbirds back at Mather Airport for the 2009 California Capital Airshow” said G. Hardy Acree, California Capital Airshow Board Chair.
As in previous years, the weekend will allow visitors to view displays of military and law enforcement aircraft, aerobatic and specialty performers, vintage and amphibious aircraft, new aircraft displays, war birds, and many others. To volunteer for this inspiring event, click here.

The Thunderbirds put on a fantastic show! I've seen them fly 3 or 4 times now and they were amazing each time!
This is a terrific event for the community. Hopefully they will come up with a way for the local non-profits to benefit better than last years event. The payout for the work put in by volunteers was virtually non-existant and many volunteers may not return this year leaving a void in the work force. The first Air Show turned out pretty decent wages for the volunteers and had potential to increase had the vendor been better able to keep products in the booths. The change to a new concessionaire last year reduced profit share to the local community groups significantly.
As for the Thunderbirds, they can put on a terrific show. I have seen them numerous times over the years. Being retired Air Force, they have performed at several air shows I have been affiliated with and have yet to disappoint me. The fun really starts when they come in to perform at an F-16 fighter base and the local jet jockeys start to do some demonstrating of their own either before they arrive or shortly after the Thunderbirds depart for destinations unknown. Then the true wannabes show their colors.
