Health care was a major contender in the Presidential race, and rightly so. Health care costs are increasing and families are struggling to afford adequate health insurance. Companies are decreasing coverage or axing company provided health insurance completely. For many Rancho Cordova families with children, the Healthy Families Program has provided the only health insurance these children will ever know. In a recent switch of providers, Healthy Families has chosen Molina Healthcare of California as the community provider over the current provider, Blue Cross.

Sacramento County’s Healthy Families Program is a state and federally sponsored program for uninsured children whose parents earn too much for Medi-Cal but who can’t afford the ever increasing cost of private insurance. The Healthy Families plan offers medical, dental and vision insurance. Children who meet the many Healthy Families requirements will be under the age of 19, will be a member of a family that has not had employee sponsored health care in the last three months, and will be a resident of California.

Molina will be able to offer $3 discounts on premiums paid by subscribers for low-cost medical coverage. In Sacramento County this year, the lowest discounted premium was $4 for a family with one child through Blue Cross. Molina was chosen because of the company’s many awards and achievements including a recent award for their Medicaid plan in Utah which earned the “Among America’s Best” ranking.

In 2008, over 9,000 children in Sacramento County were enrolled in the community provider program. More than 27,000 children in the county are enrolled in the Healthy Families Program. Families residing in Rancho Cordova can find more informationa and sign up for Healthy Families through the Healthy Families official website or by clicking  here .  Families currently taking part in the Healthy Families Program have until Dec. 31 to change providers under open enrollment.

Rancho Cordova’s EdFund Supports Families in Need

EdFund’s charity committee decided to raise food and funds for Mather Community Campus during the weeks before Thanksgiving. Employees came together and donated a truck load of food (literally). Over 500 employees donated enough perishable and non perishable food items to feed the Sacramento Area Housing Center’s Mather Community Campus’ 44 families, including 95 children in need.
