Sacramento is featuring the area’s first New Year’s Eve ball drop. In true New York fashion, the glittering ball will drop as the clock strikes midnight. The ball, which is actually a lighted cube encased in a spherical wire cage. will descend from a specially built tower and illuminate a 22,000-watt LED sign at 930 K St. But none of this would have been possible with out Lightning Science of Rancho Cordova, the creators of the sparkling orb.

The Pirates of Sacramento, a social group of pirate re-enactors, are having a pirate costume ball on January 24 to benefit ScaryU. This event is the first of it’s kind in Sacramento and promices great entertainment. Music will be provided by The Pirates Charles This band is the most popular in the pirate community and will be headlining the PirateCon event in New Orleans in April, 2009. There will be prize drawings, costume contests, and piratey vendors. A costume is not required for the event, but it is encouraged. The ball starts at 7 pm at Rancho Cordova Marriott and tickets cost $39, which will go directly toward the Jewell Performing Arts Center.

A federal official investigating the deadly home explosion in Rancho Cordova said Monday the neighborhood should have been evacuated before the blast. A gas leak was reported, though the call logs are under scrutiny and probably won’t be made public until the end of the investigation, which could take as long as 6 months to a year. A Pacific Gas & Electric worker was at the scene when the home exploded on Christmas Eve.

The National Transportation Safety Board has confirmed that a natural gas leak was the source of an explosion that killed one and injured five in Rancho Cordova on December 24th. NTSB’s Karl Gunther, a pipeline accident investigator, said the next step will be to determine where the underground pipeline broke.

The motorcycle officer who was injured Friday, December 19 in a vehicle accident is expected to completely recover from his injuries. Deputy Corey Simpson was injured on Highway 99 in Sutter County, suffering injuries to his right leg and shoulder. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department says Simpson will spend several days in the hospital.

At about 1:40 pm today a home in Rancho Cordova at 10708 Paiute Way exploded due to a suspected natural gas leak. There were unconfirmed reports that PG& E was doing work at the home earlier in the day. The explosion happened near the intersection of Grayson Way and Olson Drive.

As Christmas and the new year’s celebrations are just days away, the California Highway Patrol is encouraging drivers to be on the lookout and report drunk drivers. Some folks take their celebrating a little too far and then assume they will be able to drive safely home. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. CHP is asking for drivers to call 911 immediately after seeing a drunk driver so they can get this driver off the road.
