Community Leaders Reflect on Fallen RCPD Officer

Nov 13th, 2008 | By Michelle Ventress | Category: Featured

In the aftermath of Tuesday’s news that Officer Canfield had died after an accident on Coloma Road, community leaders are speaking out to the family and friends of the fallen officer. Canfield will be remembered by friends and acquaintances as a man who was always smiling and joking with people; a man who loved life. In a brief statement Thursday morning, Governor Arnold Swarzenegger wrote, “Sheriff’s Deputy Lawrence Canfield put his life on the line every day to protect the people of his community. We are thankful for his commitment to public safety and know that Rancho Cordova is a better place because of his service. Maria and I send our deepest condolences to Lawrence’s family, friends and fellow deputies during this difficult time.”

The Rancho Cordova Police Department will be greatly affected by the loss of such a wonderful man. When discussing losing another officer, Deputy Kevin Mickelson, president of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Association said, “I don’t think you ever get over it. It’s just a numbing effect”. After losing 4 officers in just as many years, Larry Canfield’s death rests heavy on the hearts of the department. ”Here we think we’re going to make it through a year, and here we are again”, Mickelson’s thoughts are echoed throughout the community.

Sheriff John McGinness understands how the grief of losing a comrade and friend will affect the RCPD. ”It goes like waves through the department, and I’ll tell you, through the whole law enforcement community,” McGinness said of the deputy’s death. The Rancho Cordova Police Department offers these thoughts to their fallen colleague; “Officer Larry Canfield, your Rancho Cordova Police Department and Sheriff Department’s brothers and sisters prayers and thoughts are with your family as they begin the mourning process”.

Information regarding the memorial service is still pending.
