The city of Rancho Cordova was in a state of shock after Wednesday afternoon’s fatal accident. Motorcycle officer Larry Canfield died two hours after the accident occurred on Coloma Road and Chardonay. Canfield was making a speed enforcement stop and had his lights on siren on when a white car made a left turn in front of him.

Sheriff John McGinness said in a statement that there “was no significant criminality with regards to the other driver”. This stretch of road has seen many accidents before. Three years ago an accident occurred near this same location that left a sheriff’s deputy paralyzed.  CHP will be investigating the accident on behalf of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department due to the sensitivity of the case.

Larry W. Canfield was 43 years old, a husband and a father to two young children, both under the age of 10. He was a 13 year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department and a US Army veteran.  He began his career in the Sheriff’s Department at the age of 30 and was a second generation police officer.

McGinness described Canfield as “outgoing, personable, and a good family man”.  The sherriff went on to say that “he gave his life doing exactly what he was called to do”.  There is no doubt he will be greatly missed.
