A Rancho Cordova police officer on a motorcycle has passed away after suffering serious injuries when he was hit by a white vehicle around 2 pm Wednesday afternoon, sheriff’s officials said. Other drivers stopped to stay with the officer until emergency medical services arrived. The incident took place near Sierra Madre Court and Coloma Road. Coloma Road has been closed off and traffic is currently being detoured in the area. The area should reopen to traffic Tuesday evening. The officer was taken to Mercy San Juan Hospital, officials said. The officer died in the hospital just after 4 p.m. Wednesday.
He has been identified as 43 years old and officials said he is a 13-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department and has been a motorcycle officer for four years. The officer is said to have a wife and children.
The 79 year old driver who hit the officer has been detained, but it is still unsure as to who or what was at fault for the accident. Aerial images show debris from the motorcycle scattered along Coloma Road.
