Positively Affecting our Youth: Roots and Horizons

Oct 20th, 2008 | By Michelle Ventress | Category: Featured

Rancho Cordova is home to numerous community building organizations which work to enhance the lifes of those that live here. One such organization is the Roots and Horizons program of the Folsom Cordova Community Partnership. Roots and Horizons is a mentoring program serving the children of incarcerated parents in Rancho Cordova and Folsom.

There are over 2.2 million children in the country with a parent in prison. 58% of those children are under the age of 10 and 1 in 5 were present at the time of arrest. Children of incarcerated parents are 7 times more likely to become involved in the criminal system than their peers.

Roots and Horizons supports the youth mentees by pairing them up with adult mentors and offering on going activities that encourage, enable and delight the youth. The program is proven to be successful at reinforcing the emotional and social well being of the child.

Mentors in the program are always needed.  They must commit to a full year of weekly meetings and are matched carefully to a mentee according to their interests and personalities. Weekly activities can include working on homework together, going to the movies, or participating in sports events. Roots and Horizons also plans group activities for everyone to participate in. Past events have included a disco night, pool parties, barbecues, and trips to the movies.

If you’re interested in becoming a mentor, the opportunities are nearly endless. You can find all of the information on the program and filling out an application here.
