PG&E Smart Meter- Coming to a Neighborhood Near You
Have you come home from work to find the notice that a PG&E Smart Meter will soon be installed in place of the old, manually read one? The notice promises increased ease, efficiency, and a shiny new meter. At many homes that notice is tossed in junk mail pile without a second thought to the overlooked, cobweb covered meter living in the side yard. It’s time to say goodbye to the old, and hello to the brand new, actually quite beneficial, Smart Meter.
PG&E and a privately owned contractor began the Smart Meter installation in Bakersfield in the fall of 2006. Met with much success the re-metering continues all over the state (and soon in Ranch Cordova neighborhoods). If you’ve recently moved in to a home, you could already be the proud recipient of the new meter. PG&E’s goal is to have Smart Meters installed for all of their millions of customers by the end of 2011. To check the very broad date ranges of expected installation for your area, click here.
There are actually quite a few benefits to having the new meters. PG&E will be able to collect data without ever having to step foot on our property and the billing process will run more smoothly because they don’t have to rely on in-person meter readings. When the storm season comes rolling in and your power goes off, PG&E will be able to pinpoint exactly where the outages are occurring and will be able to restore your power faster. For those of you who are trying to live a greener life (or those of you counting your pennies) the new meters allow customers to monitor their own energy use online.
Installation of the Smart Meters is quick and painless. The installer will knock on the door to let you know they are there and customers will experiece a short interruption to their electric service. Gas service should be interruption free. If you aren’t home, the installer will do the deed and leave you a little notice on your door. Remember to make sure the meter is unobstructed so the switch can be made. For more information about the Smart Meter upgrade please see PG&E’s official website.

“the new meters allow customers to monitor their own energy use online.”
That will be really cool to see how much energy we are using. I hope we can see daily results. It may help us better conserve energy by making us all aware of how much energy we are really using.
