Olympic Events in Our Own Backyard
Aug 5th, 2008 | By Michelle Ventress | Category: SportsDo you plan on enjoying the Olympics opening ceremony from the comfort of your living room? Are you counting down the days till you can proudly cheer your fellow American through diving, sprinting or the gymnastic floor routine? Lucky for those of us who live in Rancho Cordova, because we can watch the excitement in our own neighborhood.
The Outrigger Canoe World Championship is going on now through Saturday on Lake Natoma at Nimbus Flats California State Park-right across from the CSUS Aquatic Center (1901 Hazel Ave). The racing competition began on Tuesday, August 5th, with over 2,000 paddlers from 42 countries. Saturday concludes the event with the finals racing event producing the gold, silver and bronze medalists.
The event is put on by the Pacific Outrigger Canoe Association. Spectators are more than welcome to come enjoy the races and take in the sights. Families are encouraged and cheering for your favorite team is mandatory. If a little summer fun is what you need, come on over to the National Paddling Sprint Event and don’t forget the sunblock!
