Turn A Little Japanese This Weekend

Looking for something fun to do this weekend? The Gedatsu Church in Rancho Cordova is having its annual Japanese Food Bazaar and Rokujizo Festival this Saturday and Sunday, June 28 & 29.

Teriyaki chicken, udon noodles, handmade sushi, tempura and chow mein are among the tasty treats being offered. They will also have a variety of beverages for adults and children, as well as shaved ice, cookies, cupcakes and Japanese desserts.

Entertainers will give exhibitions of Japanese swords, Taiko drums, Hawaiian dance and Kendo. Raffle prizes will also be available and church members will gladly provide tours of the grounds and Shinto and Buddhist shrines.

According to congregation member Nick Johnston, the Gedatsu Church originated in Japan. It blends elements of eastern religions, and came to California during World War II. The Rokujizo Festival is one of the church’s religious celebrations. The Rancho Cordova church has been in its present location since the 1950s.   Even the repurposed quonset hut where services were originally held in is still on site.

Saturday’s Bazaar Hours are 11am-5pm, Sunday 11am-4pm.  For more information: Gedatsu Church, 4016 Happy Lane (off Old Placerville Road and Bradshaw), (916) 363-6054.
