Governor asks for federal help

An Office of Emergency Services command center in Rancho Cordova continues to play a key role in routing firefighters and equipment to battle Southern California blazes, with some staffers working 20 hours or more to help manage the crisis.

The office resembles a space mission control center, with employees on Tuesday monitoring computers, watching wall monitors and coordinating resources by phone.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday called for federal military help, particularly assistance from water-carrying planes stationed at military installations in Colorado and Wyoming. read more
