Wind Spreads Morning Rancho Cordova Wildfire

Naj Alikhan – CBS13

Gusty winds hampered crews as they fought a grass fire near Rancho Cordova Wednesday morning.

“All it takes is an ignition source and some winds and we’re definitely not out of the woods on this,” said Capt. Jeff Lynch, Sacramento Metro Fire Dept.

With winds gusting faster Wednesday than this area has seen in months, Sacramento Metro fire fighters had no choice but to call in extra crews to surround a wild land fire off White Rock Road. The fire the grew at a rapid pace because of the wind.

“Most likely this would have been a five acre fire instead of a 25-acre fire,” said Cpt. Lynch.

Lynch says wind and dry brush are a disaster waiting to happen on a day like this. Most people may have let down their guard, and because temperatures aren’t hovering around the century mark, people don’t even think about fires.

“The end of August and all the way through September is the real fire season,” said Cpt. Lynch.

Firefighters say that fire was started by a catalytic converter that ignited dry brush.
